Mailboxes can be a potential risk for landowners as well as the County.  With the following guidelines, please review your mailbox stand, strength, and position, and make changes to your mailbox.  Mailboxes need to be in accordance with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official's (AASHTO) guidelines for erecting mailboxes.  Heavy metal posts, concrete posts, and miscellaneous items of farm equipment, such as milk cans filled with concrete, are examples of potentially dangerous supports.  The ideal support is an assembly that bends or falls away  when struck by a vehicle.  Mailbox supports that should be considered are nominal 4-inch x 4-inch or 4 1/2-inch diameter wood posts, or a metal post with strength no greater than a 2-inch diameter standard strength steel pipe, embedded in no more than 24 inches into the ground.  The mailbox must also be securely attached to its post to prevent separation if struck.  The mailbox should be placed at least 8 feet from the edge of the road.
