Idaho Traffic Alerts : Type of Alerts

Below are short definitions of each type of alert.

Some alert categories, such as General Warnings, Weather and Winter Road Conditions
will tend to generate more messages than other alert categories like Closures and Crashes.

If you select Roadwork alerts, you may see the same alert message repeatedly over time. Typically a Roadwork entry is created before all the details are known about the project, sometimes months ahead of the actual beginning of construction. Roadway entries are reviewed periodically and details added as they become known. Each time an entry is reviewed, even if no additional details are added, a new alert message will be created. Many Commercial Vehicles Restrictions alerts are associated with Roadway alerts, so the same applies to this category as well.

Crashes -- This category includes all motor vehicle crashes reported on state highways.

Commercial Vehicle Restrictions -- This category is meant to include all size and weight restrictions primarily pertaining to commercial vehicles. This includes primarily vehicle height, weight, length, and axle weight limits (spring break up).

Closures -- This category includes official road closures announced by the Idaho Transportation Department. The reason for the closure will be included. This category also includes notifications when a previously closed roadway has reopened.

General Warnings-- This is a miscellaneous category of important events that can affect normal safe travel, but are not easily classified into the other message categories. It may include notification of disabled vehicles or other debris on the roadway, hazardous materials spills, blocked lanes, the presence of incident response vehicles, unusual speed restrictions, smoke from brush fires, and a host of other adverse driving conditions.

Roadwork -- This category includes announcements of highway construction or maintenance activities that may interfere with the normal flow of traffic.

Sporting and Special Events-- This category includes advanced notification of known major sporting events, or other significant public gatherings. The temporary increase in vehicles on the roadway may interfere with the normal flow of traffic prior to, during or after the scheduled event.

Traffic Reports-- This category includes reports on adverse traffic conditions. It can include reports on traffic congestion and traffic delays.

Weather -- This category includes reports on weather conditions that may adversely normal safe travel. It includes reports of snow, heavy rain, hail, dense fog, high winds and other severe weather conditions. This category may sometimes overlap with Winter Road Conditions messages.

Winter Road Conditions-- This category includes reports of adverse road conditions common during the winter season. It includes reports of icy roads, drifting snow, black ice, slippery bridge decks and other similar winter driving hazards.  This category may sometimes overlap with weather messages.
